Chinese Medicine from Gou Qi Zi

Gou Qi Zi

Gou Qi Zi, or the wolfberry fruit plant, is commonly found in Southeastern Europe and Southwest Asia, although this is currently mass grown in China. The different species of Gou Qi Zi are known as deciduous, woody perennial plants that can grow anywhere from one to three meters tall. It has a five-petal flower that is joined like ring on its base. The Gou Qi Zi variant of the Northern hemisphere bears flower during the months of June up to September. And normally, its fruits will mature from August to October, depending upon the climate of the area.

Gou Qi Zi is used in traditional Chinese medicine as an immunity enhancer. It helps improve the eyesight and protects the liver from infections. It also increases sperm production and promotes good circulation. Gou qi zi works on the liver, lungs, and kidneys to enhance the yin. The glucopyranoside and phenolic amides that are extracted from the barks of the root of Gou Qi Zi act against human pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the leaves and root barks of Gou Qi Zi are made into tea as treatment for skin diseases and inflammations. Gou Qi Zi can be eaten raw, juiced, or wined. It can also be mixed with other herbs to make a tincture.
