Chinese Medicine from Lycium

Lycium

Lycium comes from the family of solanaceae that includes potato, eggplant, chili pepper, tobacco, and tomato. It is originally grown in Southeastern Europe and Southwest Asia. But it is only in China where Lycium is commercially cultivated. Lycium is a perennial woody plant that grows up to 1 to 3 meters in length, with a five-petal flower that are joined together on the base just like morning glory and sweet potato. Lycium flower is bright red-orange in color with an ellipse shaped berry that spans less than two centimeters long. It is commonly grown in any type of soil, even in nutritionally poor soil, as long as it is well drained.

Lycium is a common herb in traditional Chinese medicine preparation. It is commonly prepared as decoction and tea. Lycium is used as an anti-bacterial agent, anti-cholesterol, anti-pyretic, diuretic, cancer, purgative, and skin tonic. The Lycium fruit decoction helps in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.
The fruit can be eaten raw and is a good treatment for diabetes, poor eyesight, lumbago, vertigo, impotence, and some menopausal disorder. Its fruit is harvested and dried up for further medicinal uses. Lycium root bark is good for coughs, fever, nosebleeds, tuberculosis and asthma. Lycium is rich in vitamins and minerals, like vitamins A, C and E.
