Chinese Medicine from Salvia Miltiorrhiza

Salvia Miltiorrhiza

Salvia Miltiorrhiza is a known shade-growing perennial plant that has different species, grown all throughout the world. Although these plants are from the same family and genus, their characteristics make them different from each other. The more common Salvia Miltiorrhiza species are Salvia Graciliramulosa, Salvia Chamaedryoides, and the Chinese Salvia Miltiorrhiza. Salvia Graciliramulosa is commonly grown in Bolivia and is considered as the most difficult specie to propagate. Salvia Chamaedryoides of Mexico and Texas, on the other hand, have the same types and colors of flowers but is different in the colors of their leaves. The Chinese Salvia miltiorrhiza grows up to 2 feet in length and width and blooms during the months of June and September.

Salvia Miltiorrhiza is a known medicinal herb in Chinese traditional medicine. It is used in treating and preventing heart conditions such as cardio vascular disorders and atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by the hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol. Salvia Miltiorrhiza has the ability to thin the blood, which if left ignored, could lead to blood clotting. It also helps improve blood circulation. In recent studies, it was proven that Salvia Miltiorrhiza can help in treating ischemic stroke or coronary artery disease. It is also used in the treatment of chronic cough and asthmatic bronchitis.
